It's user rlt and I have a couple of crappie fishing tips to share with ya'll today. 90% of crappie fishermen have no idea on how critical it is to change your fishing tackle and technique when fishing deep water for crappie. To be blunt: this is huge.
Fact: The colder the water is, the better a crappie can see.
Why, you ask?
It's real complicated and the biologist types could talk about this for hours but, the simple truth is that lower water temperatures help the cells in the crappies eyes function better. So, you need to lighten your tackle when fishing colder water by using a lighter line, some prefer 4 lb. to 6 lb. test, I prefer the 6 lb. to 8 lb test in a monofilament or fluorocarbon when fishing colder water in late fall and or winter.
And for one more tip: If you have fished for crappie for awhile, you know that they can either be in an active mode or an inactive mode. When the crappie are in an active mode they prefer contrasting colors such as red's , orange's, yellow's, and white's. On the flip side, if they are in the inactive mode they prefer green's, blue's' gray's or black's, if the background is dark.
When the crappie are in an active mode you need more movement of the lure or bait and when they are in the inactive mode you need to slow your presentation of the lure or bait down.
